B. L. Upton, Sr./D.E. Tingle Memorial Scholarship

Mr. and Mrs. Bill Upton, Jr., have established a scholarship to honor the memory of their fathers, B.L. Upton, Sr., and D.E. Tingle. Both were World War II veterans, serving their country in the U.S. Army.

Eligibility Criteria

• Haywood County resident
• Graduating Senior from a Haywood County high school
• Accepted to a community or university system college in North Carolina
• Pursuing a degree in the field of human services, preferably but not limited to the field of education
• 3.0 or better GPA
• Participation in extra curricular activities and community service
• Financial need

Selection Process and Award

The process for selecting recipients of the B.L. Upton, Sr./D.E. Tingle Memorial Scholarship will be established by the Scholarship Committee. The committee is composed of teachers, guidance personnel and administrators. A personal interview may be required. An award will be given in the amount of $1,000 to one senior from each of the three Haywood County high schools. This award may be renewed for three additional years. The Haywood County Schools Foundation, Inc., a tax-exempt charitable foundation, will administer the B.L. Upton, Sr./D.E. Tingle Scholarship fund.
